Welcome

Hi, my name is Alys Jackson and I'm an author and poet

based in Adelaide, South Australia.

My work has been published in books, magazines,

anthologies and online.

The River Goes to Sleep

Ripples leave their

Imprints on a soft and sandy rise,

Vines are dipping fingers while the

Evening winks her eyes;

Resting crimson ribbons round the river’s dusty sides.

The River Goes to Sleep is an acrostic poem, a fancy word for a fun idea. To make an acrostic poem you must start each line with the letter of a word or topic. In my poem I chose the word RIVER.

Maybe you could use your name? Each line could be something about you; your hobbies, favourite foods, pets, things you like or dislike? Try it! And have fun.

Alys

  5. Hi Alys
I loved this poem. I DON’T like writing acrostic poems because they are way to hard for me
but I do like reading them and yours is the best one yet. Can you please give me 3 tips on
how to write an acrostic poem? And how long did it take for you to come up with this
    poem?
    pleases tell me.`

    • Hi Tiaana, yes acrostic poems can be difficult. Maybe try thinking about a topic you really love. I don’t know. Maybe…a hobby or a time of year. You will need then need to choose a word for the poem. Next brainstorm and write down as many words that you can think of that match the topic you choose. You might well come up with some words that will be perfect to start each sentence in an acrostic poem. Tricky but fun to try 🙂 Alys Please show me your poem, if you have a go!! And good luck. Every poem is a good poem…

  6. Hi Alys,

  7. I like this type of poem, you can describe the topic without having to find rymthing words, it’s something hard to find rymthing words. Reading your poem it gets you imagining the scene.
