What does this list contain?
Publications that actively welcome submissions of flash fiction (stories of approximately 1,000 words) from established and emerging authors. This list also includes short-shorts, vignettes, and micro-fiction.
Why are some publications missing?
I chose not to include some publications. Reasons included: websites that appeared to be inactive; publications that appeared to have stopped publishing sometime in the recent past; publications that didn’t specifically mention flash fiction; and, well, I probably just missed some.
Won’t details constantly change?
Yes. So, my advice is to check each publication for current submission deadlines, copyright and formatting guidelines. This list is a guide only – and one which I shall try to add to when I have the time.
How competitive is the market?
Very. So, maybe spend some time reading the best of the best, especially if you’re new to the genre. One way to do this is to join a Facebook group dedicated to flash fiction or the short story. You will find links to interesting conversations, articles, stories and competitions. One of my new-found favourites is the ‘International Flash Fiction Network’.
And there are some great resources out there, too. For example; Expert Tips for Writing Flash Fiction, Jack Smith.
So there you have it. All you need to do now, is write.

Thanks for doing the work on this list. Just want to let you know: Tin House is now closed (https://tinhouse.com/on-the-closing-of-tin-house-magazine). Also, Funny Times now pays $75 – they primarily publish short humor.
Thanks Anthony! A good wake-up call to edit the list asap.
Hi Alys,
Thanks for this list.
I have submitted to Flash Frontier in the past. They are based in NZ and are lovely to deal with.

Kind regards,
Sean
Hi Sean, I’m so glad the list is useful. And thank you for the comments re. Flash Frontier. Kind regards, Alys
Thank you so much. I will try. This is so kind of you, so useful. I found only one magazine interested in short humorous stories, “Funny Times”. Am I missing something? Thank you
I just submitted my work thanks to you. I value this list of publishers because it is varied and includes Australian sites I was unaware of. As a thanks, I’m linking you and your fans to a flash published today: https://bendinggenres.com/2020/04/07/the-vista-inn/
Aloha from the islands!

Hi Alys
Could I also put forward Flash Fiction North [https://www.flashfictionnorth.com/]. It is a site dedicated to promoting northern writers in particular, and anyone from anywhere who writes in a gritty, earthy style. It is free to submit work but we don’t pay for anything. See site for further details.
Thanks a lot for this post!
John E.C. editor
Hi John, thanks for the heads-up. It’s always great to find a new site. I’ll take a look and update the list as soon as I can. And the best of luck – Alys
Hey Alys, phenomenally useful post! If you’re intending to update it at any point, I’d love to put forward Ash Tales for inclusion.
Based in the UK, we publish original post apocalyptic and dystopian fiction, exploring the end of the world in short stories (up to 2,000 words in length) and 20-minute narrated podcast episodes. Ash Tales accepts submissions year-round, and there’s no cost for submission 🙂
Here’s the site: https://ashtales.com
Thanks in advance!
Thanks Ryan! I will definitely check out Ash Tales – it sounds wonderful. Sorry it’s taken so long to reply. I have a house full of winter flu!!
Hi Alys:
I’ve been out of the writing loop for some time-last story published in 1990 In Meanjin. I found this a wonderful resource–and I particularly like the way the information is set out. Things have certainly changed (and for the better)–but it was nice getting little notes from Jennie Lee or the folk at Westerly. Not any more, I think.
Thank you for the list. I imagine it took quite a time to research.
Cheers
Thanks Margaret. It’s interesting to hear what you say – I can’t imagine getting notes from publishers these days. Most barely seem to have the time to reply to submissions. Anyway, it’s great to know that the list is useful. Good luck with your writing, Alys
What a great list. Thank you so much.
Thanks Charlie, I hope they bring you good luck!
